One of the most exciting and enjoyable trends in fashion; and in body art is mehendhi (or henna tattoos). While it may be familiar as an important accessory to any bride’s wedding day, this is not your “mother’s mehendhi” anymore. Celebrities such as Madonna, Mira Sorvino, Gwen Stefani have popularized henna tattoos in mainstream society, and it is also seen as a fashion accessory due to the influence of Bollywood.
Mehendhi has been used as cosmetic for centuries and can be used to mark a significant occasion, or to just celebrate life itself.
Henna is the green powder derived from the dried leaves of the Lawsonia Inermis plant. How does it get from a powder, and generations of tradition, onto your hands and feet?
The answer to that is Bhupi Rajput at Mehendhi Village. Bhupi is one of Canada’s most talented and creative henna artists. Her skills as a henna artist are very much in demand for bridal henna parties all over North America and her warm, out-going personality ensures an enjoyable mehendhi experience.
Bhupi learned how to do mehendhi while backpacking in India and continued to develop her art in Britain. She was a minor celebrity in Britain, and has appeared on BBC’s “Heaven and Earth” television program. Her henna designs have adorned the skin of attendees to the World Economic Forum at Davos Switzerland.
Bhupi’s henna paste recipe uses 100% all natural ingredients such as lemon juice, tea tree oil, sugar, tea, and cloves. The paste is applied to the skin using a small plastic cone and dries into a crust in about a half an hour. The henna tattoo itself will darken over the next 24 hours to gradually reveal the breath-taking detail of the design Bhupi has created on your skin.
Bhupi’s art is influenced by her interest in the latest trends in fashion, and Bollywood cinema. She has also studied the old traditional techniques and designs, appreciates the roots of the mehendhi tradition, and the need to remain true to the ancient philosophies. This can be summed-up by the Mehendhi Village slogan “Merging traditions in to your future.”
Bhupi’s mehendhi designs use many of the traditional patterns like the Lotus flower, vines, paisley, and peacocks, and you can chose from many standard designs for hands, and feet. Or, Bhupi can help you combine, or modify some design elements to create a henna tattoo that is special to you. Either way, when it is done, your mehendhi will be as unique as you are.
